The Evolution of Social Media
With the rapid growth of the internet, more people than ever are putting its power to use. One of the most popular uses of the internet is social media. The rise of numerous social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and SoSa has allowed people to connect in more ways than ever before. Even businesses have prominent social media pages that have allowed them to connect with potential customers on a personal level. In a sense, social media has fundamentally changed the way people interact with one another. At the same time, social media did not become an internet giant overnight. There has been a gradual growth of social media platforms over time.
What might surprise some people is that when social media first reached the internet, it was actually denounced by numerous people. It started off as simple chat rooms before evolving into websites where people could actually post pictures and videos, sharing them with other people. There were numerous articles that were written describing the growth of social media as a tremendous distraction in the lives of children. Others called it a waste of time. Some people even claimed that social media was responsible for poor spelling and obnoxious block parties. Quickly, these thought processes began to change.
On the other hand, social media continued to grow despite its critics.. It evolved from chat rooms into sites such as MySpace and Facebook, where people could share information about their lives. Eventually, even adults were realizing the tremendous benefits of social media. This platform provided people with a way to connect with each other across the vast reaches of time and space. People learned that they could use these sites to connect with old high school classmates and stay in touch with close friends as life continued to move on. Technology also became more powerful, as these platforms were accessible on smart devices. Then, the social media phenomenon took off.
Now, social media is a fundamental part of many people’s lives. For better or for worse, social media has become an integral part of the marketing campaigns of businesses ranging from mom and pop shops to massive corporations. Even political campaigns are using social media to communicate platforms to potential voters. People are able to post photos and videos on social media platforms, gathering followers and being tagged as “influencers.” Now, social media itself is an enormous industry that has a tremendous reach, breaking down barriers and connecting people in ways never thought possible.
Clearly, social media is a large part of the daily lives of many people. There are numerous platforms out there, such as SoSa, where people are able to come together, make new friends, and socialize. Individuals are able to connect across oceans in a new way, learning about new cultures and experiences while having constructive discussions about anything that crosses the mind. It will be exciting to see how social media continues to grow and develop in the future.
