Pros & Cons of working in a startup and a global company

When we are talking about work in a startup, do we mean vast prospects, expanding your horizons, and chance of getting a share in the project, or eternal insomnia, lack of life-work balance and stress? Do we face the same issues when employed by a big company? Let’s discuss it in detail.

Work in a startup is substantially different from employment in a big company. Here one person usually does a job instead of several specialists and works in non-stop mode, which brings a certain amount of psychological stress. On the other side, working in a startup has a lot of advantages, we would like to list:

1. Ability to develop soft skills and gain experience.

Typical startup team player is a person who performs cross functional work. That can include negotiations, advertising, market research, analysis of risks, search for investors, etc. This is an excellent opportunity to pump up not only your professional skills, but also personal qualities.

 2. Opportunity to identify knowledge gaps.

Given that you will be responsible for multiple tasks within the company, it is quite normal that at some point you will need some entirely new knowledge. At this point you should be able to learn quickly and explore the market search for innovations. Later on, with such a background and open mind you can easily get a job in any type of business.

However, we have to admit that not only in a startup you’ll be able to learn more about innovations, for example, about artificial life products, which immerse people into the virtual world, like the Social Discovery Group Lab project Journey implies.

3. Freedom and minimum control.

The main thing which is valued in startups is to show the result. How it will be achieved- does not matter so far. So, you have enough operational space to achieve the goals, and there will be no boss controlling every other step. Also, when you make your own decisions and succeed, the level of self-motivation and self-confidence grows fast. In that way, a startup is a great opportunity to give yourself a try.

On the other hand, we can see that the same values are successfully performed in a global tech company Social Discovery Group, where they develop and test new products in the area of video streaming, AI technologies, entertainment and game mechanics.

4. Ability to move quickly from idea to action.

World is fast changing and you have to embrace the new reality and perceive it. Working in a startup, you have to learn how to make decisions fast. Any bright idea should be immediately tested and implemented.

5. Opportunity to get your share.

Becoming part of the team on the very start of the project, employees usually get a certain stake or the prospect of getting it as a bonus. Accordingly, when the startup hits the securities are growing in price.

Therefore, if you are ambitious, risky, capable of fast decision-making and want freedom of actions― you are the best choice for a startup. No doubt, there you’ll gain some new way of thinking and get some valuable experience.
