Gen Z, the generation born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, will soon be a dominant part of the workforce. This is rapidly approaching, as by 2030, Gen Z will make up 30% of the global workforce. They are also entering the workforce at an earlier age, with 33% of Gen Z individuals aged 16 to 19 already having jobs, compared to 26% of Millennials at the same age. To meet the demand, organizations are projected to hire 14.7% more college graduates in 2023 than in 2022.

However, hiring Gen Z presents unique challenges for recruitment professionals and organizations. 74% of hiring managers find Gen Z the most difficult generation to deal with in the workplace. Several factors contribute to this hiring gap. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant increase in layoffs for Gen Z. Negative media coverage and misaligned career expectations further complicate matters, with 70% of Gen Z employees being at risk of reneging on their job offers.

To recruit and retain top Gen Z talent effectively, companies must adapt their hiring strategies and focus on certain key areas. Setting clear expectations and having transparency is crucial. Gen Z expects to have a solid understanding of their roles, including salary and benefits, daily tasks, growth opportunities, and paid time off. Gen Z appreciates having regular check-ins with supervisors, and receiving straightforward recognition for their work.
