Liberty HealthShare Named Highest-Rated Healthsharing Ministry by MinistryWatch
Liberty HealthShare has been rated the highest-scoring healthsharing ministry among the organizations MinistryWatch evaluates in its Healthcare Sharing comparison database.
MinistryWatch, an independent organization that evaluates more than 1,000 Christian ministries using financial filings and public disclosures, maintains a comparison database that ranks healthsharing ministries against one another on financial efficiency, transparency, and governance. The database includes Liberty HealthShare alongside Christian Healthcare Ministries, Medi-Share, and Samaritan Ministries, among other organizations that facilitate voluntary medical cost sharing for members with shared religious values.
MinistryWatch’s own profile of Liberty HealthShare confirms the ranking directly. The ministry holds a four-star overall efficiency rating, along with a five-star fund acquisition rating.
MinistryWatch’s overall efficiency rating breaks into four sub-scores. Liberty HealthShare earned five stars for fund acquisition, the highest mark, and four stars each for resource allocation and asset utilization. No single sub-score is perfect, but the combination is enough to give the ministry 4-star and give with confidence ratings, the only healthsharing ministry MinistryWatch currently rates with both.
What Sets the Score Apart
MinistryWatch calculates a separate measure alongside the star rating called the donor confidence score, a 100-point scale about governance and disclosure. Liberty HealthShare scored 78 out of 100.
The Numbers Behind the Rating
MinistryWatch’s efficiency scoring draws on audited financial data the ministry files with the IRS. According to Liberty HealthShare’s most recent public filings, members shared more than $454 million in billed medical expenses in 2024. After the ministry repriced those bills to fair and reasonable rates, the shared total came to just over $154 million, saving members more than $300 million on the difference. A Pattern Across Independent Reviewers
The MinistryWatch rating follows a similar pattern from other outside evaluators. Charity Navigator has given Liberty HealthShare a four-star rating. Candid awarded the ministry its Gold Seal for Transparency for the fifth consecutive year. The Better Business Bureau accredits Liberty HealthShare with an A+ rating. Each organization uses a different methodology, and none of them evaluate the same criteria MinistryWatch does, but the overlap across four separate independent reviewers points to a consistent picture of how the ministry manages its finances and discloses information.
Liberty HealthShare operates as a nonprofit healthsharing ministry founded in 1995 by five families connected to the Gospel Light Mennonite Church in rural Virginia. The ministry now offers six healthsharing programs, with monthly share amounts starting at $89 for its Liberty Freedom program and rising for programs that carry higher per-incident sharing limits.
What the Rating Means for Prospective Members
MinistryWatch’s rating says nothing about member satisfaction with day-to-day service, wait times on the phone, or how quickly a specific bill gets processed.
