Responsive Websites: Here is How They Work [Infographic]

It may or may not surprise you that 60% of Internet access is mostly mobile. Yep, its true! Using mobile devices to search the internet to find information on products and services is very popular these days. This is why it is so important for businesses of all sizes to invest in responsive websites

Unfortunately, small businesses have not jumped on the “mobile” bandwagon just yet.  As a matter of fact, earlier this year, Marketing Land reported that only “6 percent of SMBs have mobile sites, 45 percent don’t have any site at all“.  Bananas right?

What are responsive websites?

In simple terms, responsive websites give users the ability to view content and information about a site on a wide range of mobile devices.  Some of the main benefits of responsive websites for small businesses include:

  • Your prospects can view and access your website on various mobile devices
  • The ability to reach the tablet and mobile audience (I can vouch for this one.  My blog currently gets around 45% of its traffic from mobile users)
  • You will have only ONE URL to maintain, instead of two: your main website and a separate mobile site for your business
  • Your visitors will have a better browsing experience
  • You will save money by not having to pay for a separate mobile website
  • Better placement in the search engines; Google Loves responsive websites

To give you a better idea as to how responsive websites work and how they can benefit your small business, I’m sharing an Infographic courtesy of Verveuk.eu  Enjoy!

How to Build a DIY Responsive Website For Your Business

If you are a small business owner that wants to create a website on your own, here is a list of resources that you can use to do so affordably:

1.  Choose a Domain Name

Netfirms and Namecheap  are two of the least expensive domain service providers that you can register your domain name with.  Your domain is simply your (www.yourbusinessname.com) address that people type in when they want to visit your website.

2.  Sign up for Web Hosting

I recommend using Hostgator to host your website.  They are the provider that I use to host my sites.

3.  Install WordPress

WordPress is a CMS platform (content management system) that makes it super easy to get your website up and running in no-time. Hostgator has a one-click install feature that you can use with your web hosting account to install WordPress in under 5 minutes.

4.  Choose a responsive WordPress Website Theme for Your Small Business Website

As mentioned in this article and infographic, a responsive theme will allow your website to be visible on all kinds of mobile devices. Themeforest.net and Template Monster are two sites that you can use to find affordable responsive WordPress themes for your site.

5.  Install your Theme

WordPress.org has a ton of free themes to choose from.  However, if you want a more professional looking website theme, head over to Themeforest or Template Monster and pick one.

6.  Make Edits Where Necessary

Update and make edits to your theme where necessary.  This includes adding your contact information (email address, phone number, fax number, social media networks and etc.)

7.  Tell the world  Your Website is Live

Tell your friends family and clients that your website is up and running.  Spread the word on your social media networks.
